She was late.
Chris looked at his watch for the fifth time in as many minutes, then glanced again at the doorway; 7:20 and no sign of D.J. Halloran. Had she stood him up?
Despite being a weeknight, Lasagne Lovers bustled with business. The restaurant, located on a stretch of highway that led from Lakeview to one of the affluent northern suburbs, did a brisk trade with young, urban professionals. Most of the tables were filled with couples, obviously stopping in on their way home from work for dinner after a hard day in separate career pursuits. The repeated reminder of his solitary existence made Chris envious. At table after table surrounding him, a man and a woman shared their day with soft whispers,
